Anastasia Bay

Born in France, Bay now lives and works in Brussels. Since graduating from Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts de Paris in 2012, Bay has gone on to be the subject of numerous solo exhibitions at Sorry We’re Closed, Brussels; Venus Over Manhattan, New York; and Galerie Derouillon, Paris. Her work sits in numerous prestigious public collections, including Fondation Lafayette Anticipations, Paris and Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami.

Sometimes we need the support of those we admire to help us navigate the unknown. For Anastasia Bay embarking on a new painting, this support is surrounding herself with an army of books; brimming with reproductions of the artists and artworks she treasures most. Her end result may bear little resemblance to her source material, yet it’s the noise and the inspiration that they provide that drives Bay to put pen to paper.

It’s a drive that started as early as childhood. Notebooks from these days are filled with dreams of attending the Beaux-Arts de Paris. These manifestations came to be realised, graduating from the prestigious art school in 2012. It was there that she refined her paintings where singers, acrobats, and troublemakers wander in and out; densely entangled into the format of the painting.

Her line is simple and assertive. Her characters are caught in vibrant movements, blurring the lines of their faint bodies and faces. Framed by saturated blocks of monochromatic colour, her figures exist on the canvas as semi-abstract forms, travelling across the canvas with speed and purpose.
